The Wild Textile

Handwoven + Naturally Dyed Goods for the Home

Meet the Maker

Hello! I'm Lizz (Berry) Brown, the founder, maker, and innovator behind The Wild Textile. All of my products are hand crafted in my home studio in Portland, Maine.  I am a hand-weaver, natural dyer, quilter, and all around fiber enthusiast.

My love for cloth began at an early age, when I was familiarized with family heirlooms from India - some over a century old. Colorful antique silk saris and detailed woven tapestries were a part of my childhood - taking on the form of costumes, canopies or strewn across my window as curtains. These fueled my love not only for textiles, but for light, texture, and color itself. Today you can still find my home adorned with some of the very same pieces that inspired me as a child.

I studied fine craft from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, and concentrated in Textiles, where I primarily focused on hand weaving techniques. Still today, weaving has continued to fascinate me in its endless possibilities of shape, pattern, material textures. However my favorite trait, is its ability to be equally functional as it is beautiful.

Once I added natural dyeing to my process, it not only allowed me to unlock new hues and escape the less-sustainable side of the textiles industry, but it also allowed me to combine my other passion in life: plants! Now I can search for color on a mountainside, a roadside bank, or even more accessible... my crisper drawer!
